Coding4Kids - Fit for the digital future

The increasingly rapid pace of digital development harbours enormous potential, but also presents us with major challenges. It is particularly important for our children to develop comprehensive digital skills as early as possible in order to be prepared for the challenges of the future.

Programme your own games

Learn to programme during the holidays

For many years, Coding4Kids has been making a decisive contribution to ensuring that children not only familiarise themselves with new technologies, but also understand them and can apply them in their own projects. In a one-week, free holiday course in partnership with Coding4Kids, we offer 10 to 14-year-olds the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of programming in a fun way. Under the guidance of experts and professional trainers, the children develop their own games in the easy-to-learn programming environment "Scratch".

Building important competences

  • Produce digital content yourself instead of just consuming it
  • Formulate and structure your own ideas and turn them into reality
  • Recognising problems early and taking countermeasures in time
  • Prioritise correctly when time is limited
  • Finding alternative solutions to successfully exit dead ends
  • Save progress correctly to avoid data loss
Creating instead of just consuming

It makes a big difference whether you only consume digital content or produce it. Kids learn to break down complex topics and solve problems in a structured way.

Coding4Kids at WD offers a successful mix of learning and sporting activities. It opens up the world behind the games to the children. Lio definitely wants to take part again next year.

Creativity and teamwork

My favourite part was designing and programming the characters. The most difficult part was setting up the game so that the enemies were correctly distributed across the worlds.

As one of our first corporate partners for Coding4Kids, World Direct is demonstrating its innovation leadership also in teaching digital skills. We appreciate the great spirit and support from one of the leading companies in the field of digitalisation and look forward to another successful cooperation in the coming years!

Visitors to our Innovation Space look into highly concentrated faces. Laptops are running the Scratch programming environment, sound effects are emanating from sophisticated games that the kids have devised themselves and are programming them with full dedication.

It takes a lot of persuasion to get the 14 girls and boys to think about something other than their current software project. Mums and dads report that the "flow" state continues into the evening and that they are informed in detail about "sprites", "collision detection" and "parallax scrolling" until the children can no longer keep their tired eyes open. Many raised hands are a clear answer to the morning's question if anyone continued to work on the project in the evening.

The location

In order not to compromise the holiday feeling, the course doesn't take place in a typical classroom environment, but in our Innovation Space, equipped with beanbags, indoor lawn and beach loungers - with Marty McFly and R2-D2 smiling motivationally from the walls.

Compensating for screen time

Physical exercise and balance are extremely important, especially after many hours in front of a screen. We also want to teach the children this aspect for everyday life and their future careers. Getting the kids away from their laptops is always a challenge, but one that we are happy to take on. In almost any weather, we use the facilities on our campus to get the children out and about in the fresh air.

What is "Scratch"?

Scratch is a visual programming language designed by the renowned MIT Media Lab especially for 8 to 16-year-olds and is also the world's largest coding community for children. Young people use the platform to create digital stories, games and animations that they can share with others around the world. Scratch was developed by a non-profit organisation as free software to promote computer science thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, teamwork and equal opportunities in the digital world.
